Review by Mark Brennand of Light House Film Club
This is a film that is hard to like but that is as much a compliment about the direction as it is of lead Michael Keaton, whose portrayal of the odious Ray Kroc is superb. Employing the same on the edge of a mental breakdown persona as he did with Birdman, Keaton brilliantly encapsulates Kroc’s manic drive to succeed and his ruthlessness once he has done so.
The story is true and it centres on Ray Kroc, a middle aged salesman, who turned two brothers’ innovative food eatery, McDonalds, into one of the biggest restaurant businesses in the world. Kroc’s mantra was persistence, a trait he used to great effect to convince the brothers that he could roll out their fast food template across America.
It was not all plain sailing and persistence, on its own, was not enough. Where Kroc shone was in his vision of what could be achieved allied to a gift for employing the ideas of others. As his business takes off, egomania takes over. And when it does, for the morally upstanding McDonalds, there was only ever going to be one sorry outcome.
